Come Chinese New Year, mandarin orange hit tables across Singapore.
Usually in original form. It can be also sauce form. They usually have been eaten
in plain form or in salad. These orange super fruits have a long journey before
they ever make it to our holiday plate.
In Western country, their favorite fruit is cranberries. Odd
thing is seldom people know the little pinky fruits are primarily harvested in
water. They begin as vines in wetland called bog.
In June, small pink flowers bloom. They said the flowers
look like crane, so they give the berry its name, cranberry. Around late June, the flowers fall of, and
actual cranberries start to grow. After that harvesting happens between September
and October.
The farmer pours in water in bog and use a harvesting
machine to churn up the vine to knock the berries off. The berries have four
air pockets inside, so they float to surface of water. Eventually the berries
will be pushed to one corner of bog. That is the farmer take them off.
Both mandarin orange or cranberries can become 1000
different product. Ranging from juice, dried fruit, to of course sauce. The products are sold in stores across 100
countries worldwide.
